The Assistant Controller position is a multi-faceted role with three main areas of emphasis. They are, to coordinate month end financial reporting, to act as the Canadian project accountant supporting our project management team, and to provide oversight to both the Canadian and USA billing clerks. This position ensures that the company procedures conform to generally accepted accounting principles for the business, which operates in a multi-company, multi-currency, intercompany environment. This position reports to the Controller.


  • Reporting and reconciliation of working papers for both CANADA and USA operating companies, including the review of project WIP, journal entries, USA/Canada payroll entries, inventory, accounts payable, accounts receivable, intercompany, and USA/Canada statutory reporting
  • Responsible for the preparation of monthly external reporting to financial institutions
  • Prepare biweekly cash flow reporting
  • Monthly government remittances GST/PST/QST
  • Assist with year-end audit and preparation of audited financial statements
Project Accounting and Billing
  • Prepare, analyze, and present monthly operating results for each job site, provide weekly hourly spend
  • Set up new projects, cost codes and budgets for Canada
  • Manage project specific contracts, rates, and billing procedures with site staff
  • Coordinate both Time and Material Master Service Agreements and Lump Sum billing
  • Maintain and expedite accounts receivable collections
  • Support new systems project selections and implementation from a strategic finance and internal control perspective. Be a lead user of accounting and reporting software tools
  • Train, and mentor accounting and administrative staff
  • Other related duties as assigned or required


  • Minimum of five (5) years of professional accounting experience
  • University degree in Business/Accounting
  • Professional accounting designation (such as CA, CPA, CGA, CMA) an asset, or currently enrolled
  • Extensive experience and knowledge of all aspects of corporate accounting and financial management
  • Knowledge of all relevant Canadian and USA Federal, Provincial/State, and local requirements regarding financial records
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, strong work ethic and positive team attitude
  • Experience with query building and reporting writing
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office (specifically Excel)
  • Experience with enterprise accounting software packages (or similar)
  • Proficient communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Experience in the construction industry in a multi-currency organization is an asset
